Seeds of Compassion

A fund to support the Dharma in the San Diego community

Program Overview

The goal of the Seeds of Compassion Fund is to support the development and offering of novel approaches to sharing the Buddha's teachings of mindfulness, compassion, generosity, and liberation with the larger community. We are particularly interested in applications that serve people who might not otherwise have access to these teachings.

Let us help you bring your idea to life! Anything that supports or spreads the Dharma is welcome. For example:

  • Are you planning a mindfulness or insight meditation class?
  • Would you like to be able to offer an event on compassion or finding joy?
  • Are you a Dharma organization that needs funds for an outreach project?

Use the form below to apply.

Application Process

We are currently considering requests for grants up to $1000 focused on San Diego County. Your application will be evaluated in terms of funds availability and alignment with Insight San Diego's mission and values.

Applications are accepted from domestic, local non-profit organizations for new and ongoing projects. Awards are not made for fundraising events, endowment funds, debt retirement, or lobbying. Insight San Diego may request additional information in order to evaluate an application. Additionally:

  • Recipients are limited to 1 award per calendar year
  • Awards are not made to cover costs such as registration fees to attend an activity such as retreat. Rather, we may make an award to the organization offering the activity to offset program/project costs.

To be considered for Seeds of Compassion funding, Insight San Diego must receive this application.

Past Grant RECIPIENTS

With appreciation to our supporters and donors, in 2023, the Seeds of Compassion Fund provided grants to support two Dharma focused programs in the San Diego community.

Our grant supports programs such as their Antiracist Study Group and their workshops around trauma and somatic healing methods. Bobby Chowa Werner, resident teacher at Sweetwater Zen Center, shared his gratitude for the opportunity to offer programming to those that are typically underrepresented in American Buddhishm.

This grant supports an outreach program at the Juvenile Detention Facility (Youth Transition Campus) in Kearny Mesa. Jeffrey Zlotnik, co-founder and CEO of Dharma Bum Temple, commented "It is such a joy and honor to have your support. I have always been so moved at the way Buddhist communities support each other.”
