If we could surrender to Earth’s intelligence,
we would rise up rooted, like trees.
Rainer Maria Rilke
This group explores the social and climate justice issues of our time within the context of Buddhist practices and teachings. It is a place where activists can deepen their knowledge of Buddhist earth-related readings and where members can dialogue with one another about our activism and values.
Upcoming meetings are being held virtually. Sign up below to receive weekly updates with more information.
We meet on the first Monday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm.
We are currently reading Boundless Heart - The Buddha's Path of Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity by Christina Feldman
ABout the Group
Climate justice, as a form of environmental justice, concerns the fair treatment of all people and freedom from discrimination in the creation of policies that address climate change. The potential health consequences of climate change will disproportionately affect poor people, people of color, and low-income countries and profoundly affects human rights and social justice.
What some of our participants say:
"I attend SCJ where other activists understand my values and struggles. We share our deepest pain but also the hope that we are rebuilding the damaged earth little by little.”
"Participation in the SCJ Group has enriched my understanding and diversified my personal practices and activism. Group members provide a welcoming, deeply curious and nonjudgmental environment in which to examine the intersection of Buddhism and SCJ issues."
Our sanga comes together to listen to each other and share our thoughts and feelings as we explore, learn, and talk about our concerns, individual practices, and actions that support us. Our meetings include meditation, a personal check-in, and a conversation based on readings from social or climate justice books written by Buddhist practitioners. All are welcome.
We begin our meeting with a 20-minute meditation, so please join at 6:30 or after the meditation.
