Dynamic Tensions in Dharma Practice

Dharma Talk Summary: It’s hard to talk about dharma because what is wisdom in one moment, is a mistake in another. There’s no single dharma drum we can just march too, independent of the context. Wisdom creates the path rather than follows it. In this talk, we’ll explore the ways that the dharma emerges from dynamic tensions – confidence and humility, effort and effortlessness, action and passivity, compassion and equanimity.

Matthew Brensilver, MSW, PhD teaches retreats at the Insight Retreat Center, Spirit Rock and other Buddhist centers. For more than a decade, was a core teacher at Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society. Before committing to teach meditation full-time, he spent years doing research on addiction pharmacotherapy at the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine. He has taught extensively about the intersection between mindfulness and psychotherapy at UCLA and other universities. He serves on the Board of Directors at Spirit Rock and Insight Meditation Center. Matthew is the co-author of two books about meditation during adolescence and continues to be interested in the unfolding dialogue between Buddhism and science.
